EXPRMNTL
Brecht Debackere
In 1949, the casino in Knokke, a small Belgian seaside resort, became the epicentre for a seminal event in the history of experimental and avant-garde film. The Festival international du cinéma expérimental de Knokke-le-Zoute, also known as EXPRMNTL, was presented five times between 1949 and 1974, with each edition achieving a mythical status. It was a gathering place for counterculture filmmakers of the 1960s who went on to become legends and whose films questioned the very nature of images and film. Filmmaker Brecht Debackere looks at experimental cinema through the history of this festival, combining archival images with commentary by such artists as Peter Kubelka, Jonas Mekas and Agnès Varda, who made their debut at EXPRMNTL.
