FIFA EXPÉRIMENTAL – Les 50 ans du Groupe Intervention Vidéo – GIV
Presented only in theatres
FIFA Expérimental is an out-of-competition, by-invitation section of the festival put together by visual and media arts curator Nicole Gingras, from Montréal. This selection highlights innovative approaches to film and video from the following angles: creative processes, modes of collaboration between artists in the production of a work and the workings of memory on identity. This panorama of exploratory cinema is composed of fifteen works assembled into four programs.
The FIFA Expérimental – LES 50 ANS DU GROUPE INTERVENTION VIDÉO – GIV program pays tribute to Groupe Intervention Vidéo – GIV, a Montréal organization dedicated to the distribution, exhibition and production of works by women (in its most inclusive definition) since 1975.
For this hommage to the 50 years of existence and influence of Groupe Intervention Vidéo – GIV, I invited three artists whom I deeply respect for the singularity of their vision and their commitment to video art, performance and storytelling. The challenge for them was to examine the GIV collection, which now comprises 490 women directors, and to dig deep into their memories in search of a memorable encounter with a work discovered at GIV.
Anne Golden has chosen a video from feminist activists Jean Carlomusto and Maria Maggenti. Monique Moumblow has selected the first film/video by visual artist Freda Guttman. Kim Kölle Valentine has picked a video by interdisciplinary artist Cathy Sisler investigating the notion of double. Each of them also signs a text about their selection. What started out as a spontaneous idea turned into an astonishing conversation between several women’s voices.
