Frei Otto: Spanning the Future
Joshua Hassel
In one of the last interviews given before his death, German architect Frei Otto talks about his influences, and the formal and philosophical principles that guided his work. The designer of Munich’s celebrated Olympic Stadium is renowned for his canvas structures, the ethereal and emblematic membranes that emphasize the link between architecture and the forces of nature. Among his major creations: the German Pavilion at Montreal’s Expo 67, which vaulted him into the pantheon of visionary modern architects, alongside Buckminster Fuller, Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra. This film by Joshua V. Hassel takes viewers on an historical journey, shedding light on an architect who inspired the world of tomorrow.
