As part of her Carte Blanche at FIFA, Isabella Cichero pays tribute to Gabriela Mistral with a brand-new digital fresco, presented as a world premiere near the Saint-Laurent metro station in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles.
A poet, teacher, diplomat, and feminist, Gabriela Mistral (1889−1957) remains a towering figure in Latin American literature. In 1945, she became the first Latin American writer — and the first woman — to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her work continues to resonate today with its depth, humanity, and unwavering commitment to social justice.
This digital artwork is created by Delight Lab, a Santiago-based collective founded by Andrea and Octavio Gana. Since 2009, their practice has explored light, space, and sound through immersive and socially engaged works. Winners of the Audience Award at the Moscow Festival of Light in 2014 for Ritual Hain, they bring together art and visual poetry in powerful, thought-provoking installations.
With this digital fresco, FIFA and Isabella Cichero offer a renewed perspective on Gabriela Mistral’s legacy, bridging memory and contemporary creation.
Through an innovative visual language, Delight Lab connects past and present, bringing Mistral’s words into the contemporary space. This work reminds us of the importance of mutual recognition and cultural exchange. The intervention invites reflection on the significance of words and their impact on current cultural processes, where literature and visual art converge to create a space for contemplation and inspiration.
With this tribute to Gabriela Mistral, we will draw a connection between the critical and social perspective that Mistral conveyed in her messages published in newspapers of her time — just as a post would be today — addressing topics that remain just as relevant, such as extractivism, the symbolism and allegory of dominant and violent systems, as opposed to the more delicate yet equally powerful force of subtler symbols.
