Itimad Ud Daula – Le mausolée Moghol
Richard Copans
In 1622 in Agra, the capital of the Mughal Empire, Nur Jahan (“Light of the World”) decided to build a mausoleum for his father Itimad Ud Daula (“Pillar of the Empire”). This masterpiece was a turning point in the history of Mughal architecture, favouring white marble instead of red sandstone. Every component respected the laws of Islam, but the tomb also included paintings that copied themes from Persia, China and even Europe.
