L’avenir du passé, Pierre et Yolande Perrault
Mina Rad
What does an Iranian woman do in Île-aux-Coudres, more than 14,000 kilometres from her native culture? In search of her past, it was paradoxically in her new home that she found her answers. The story of this film is that of the encounter of a film director with one of the pillars of documentary film, Pierre Perrault. Despite the cultural difference, she was struck by her discovery of the work and world of the Quebec filmmaker, who was able to put the cultural identity of a territory into images – a culture that had followed its own path within the borders of Quebec. Having met Yolande Perrault, who still embodies on a daily basis the vision of the world borne by her husband’s films sixteen years after his death, the director of this film imbued her work with an intuition that reflects the emotions of the unforgettable artist.
