In Krakow in 1942, at the height of the Nazi occupation, Tadeusz Kantor, the eminent Polish director who would revolutionize European theatre with his play, Dead Class, created independent underground theatre together with young artists.The film sheds light on the beginnings of this group that would go on to become figures in the Polish avant-garde of the 20th century. They include painters Jerzy Nowosielski, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Jerzy Kujawski and future filmmaker Wojciech Jerzy Has.
