Pavlensky – Man and Might
Irene Langemann
Award for Best Portrait, FIFA 2017
How far does our civic responsibility go? This is one of the questions explored in this film about the Russian performance artist Petr Pavlensky. Filmmaker Irene Langemann takes an empathetic and insightful look at Pavlensky’s artistic activities, his family and his run-ins with the law, and illustrates the depth of his commitment to individual freedom. Nailing and piercing his naked flesh, he opposes the abuse of power by Russian authorities, whom he believes silence Russian artists who tackle political questions. In 2012, he attracted international attention by sewing his lips together in solidarity with the members of Pussy Riot, imprisoned for vandalism and inciting religious hatred.
