Philip Dadson: Sonics From Scratch
Orlando Stewart, Simon Ogston
Few New Zealand artists have made as powerful an impact as Philip Dadson (b.1946), who has earned an international reputation for sonic invention, sophisticated video installations and bold experimentation. Dadson performed with Cornelius Cardew’s Scratch Orchestra before launching his own group, From Scratch, active from 1974 to 2002. Invented instruments, unusual improvisations and rituals lie at the heart of his practice. Illustrated by remarkable performances by From Scratch, this documentary charts Dadson’s career from his humble beginnings to his eventual world recognition.
