Philosophy of “Tsumugi”: The World of Fukumi Shimura
Yasushi Kishimoto
For 60 years, Fukumi Shimura (born in 1924) has been weaving kimonos with silk yarn she has dyed using plant materials of all kinds. She has elevated tsumugi, or weaving, to a high art. Sensitive, imaginative and fascinated by nature and its infinite variety of colours, she was named a “Living National Treasure” in Japan. For Shimura, weaving is not just an artistic activity, but a quest for harmonious coexistence with nature. This poetic, meditative film presents her vision of the world.
