The Alphabet of Fear
John Albert Jansen
The Romanian-born German writer Herta Müller (b.1953) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2009. Her father served in the SS during World War II, and after the war her mother was sent to a Soviet labour camp. The repression of the Ceausescu regime and the relentless harassment of the Securitate cast a large shadow over the author’s studies and adult life. This film explores the roots of her work, her mortal fears and zest for life reflected in all her writings.
