The Bishop, the Architect and the Baldachin. Gaudi in the Mallorca Cathedral
Cesc Muleet
The silhouette of the Majorca Cathedral dominates the Mediterranean skyline. Construction of this church began in the fourteenth century and bears the mark of successive generations of artists and craftsmen. Antoni Gaudí, nicknamed “God’s architect” and creator of the Sagrada Família (Barcelona), one of the world’s most iconic buildings, worked on the Cathedral from 1904 to 1914, contributing his creative genius to the project at the behest of then-bishop Pere Joan Campins. Gaudí considered this Gothic building to be “a poem written in stone.”
