Uli Sigg’s collection sheds light both on China’s art and its contemporary society. Over the years, the now world-renowned collector acquired works by China’s leading living artists. In China, the Swiss entrepreneur and ambassador is one of the best known figures in the art world, for his commitment to all forms of artistic expression spanning several decades. His impressive collection of contemporary Chinese was assembled primarily in response to a lack of genuine interest in the international community, and even in China, for the country’s contemporary artistic output. As he prepares to donate most of the works in his collection to Hong Kong’s Museum Plus (M+), opening in 2019, filmmaker Michael Schindhelm looks back over Sigg’s career and follows him to China, where he meets with influential artists such as Ai Weiwei and Lijun Fang, whose work he has supported for many years.
