Thomas Ostermeier, insatiable théâtre
Jérémie Cuvillier
Thomas Ostermeier is one of the leading figures in today’s European theatre. Steeped in the great tradition of German performing arts, he is particularly interested in contemporary restagings of the canonical works. His productions are at once grandiose and intimate, constantly renewing the theatrical experience for artists and audiences alike. In this film by Jérémie Cuvillier, we see the rehearsals for The Seagull, which premiered in Lausanne in 2016. We also witness Ostermeier’s insatiable desire for dramatic excellence and truth as he takes hold of Chekhov’s play, schooling the actors in the complexities of the text. With the help of an acting method devised by the director himself, the eight actors assume their roles in a very personal and authentic manner.
