Wa Shan
Juliette Garcias
At the foot of the “elephant hill” in the Chinese province of Zhejiang, La Wa Shan (literally “mountain of tiles”) lies a guest house unlike any other, built between 2011 and 2013 by architect Wang Shu. Made of recycled materials and packed earth, it represents a “provocation” in a concrete-mad nation, rising to the challenge of sustainable architecture.
