Karl Lagerfeld (born in 1935) and Yves Saint Laurent (1936−2008) belong to the same generation. Although they were very close when they were starting out, the relationship between the two fashion designers was at times fractious up until Saint Laurent’s death. The fashion world has offten viewed them as rivals, even if they always held each other in high esteem. Interviews and archival photographs bring to life a half-century of fashion and haute couture and look back at the evolution of French society from 1960 to the 2000s.
