Edo Avant Garde
Linda Hoaglund
This documentary shines a light on the Japanese artists of the Edo era (1603−1868), true pioneers of “modern art.” During this period, Japan was prospering in peaceful isolation from Western powers, and artists were boldly experimenting with abstraction, minimalism, surrealism and the illusion of 3D. Directed with great flair, this film is a masterful presentation of Edo art, tracing the artists’ roots and inspirations in nature, Buddhism and Shinto animism. Supremely beautiful.
