Le triomphe des images il y a mille ans
Jerome Prieur
In the 11th century, the walls of religious buildings throughout France began to be decorated with paintings. Filmmaker Jérôme Prieur presents a detailed exploration of the painted scenes in Saint Martin’s church and Saint Savin abbey, dubbed the “Romanesque Sistine Chapel.” His carefully crafted film includes commentary by medieval historians and contemporary painters. Their scholarly and insightful observations help us better understand the reasons for these images, the creative process behind them and some of their meanings and, above all, appreciate their artistic qualities.
