Les aventuriers de l’Art moderne — Épisode 5 : Libertad! 1930 – 1939
Pauline Gaillard, Amélie Harrault, Valérie Loiseleux
The inter-war period brims with enthusiasm and illusions, a desire for social, moral, artistic and political revolution. In the early 1930s, the rise of fascism compels artists to become politically engaged. Between fascism and communism, Europe is being torn apart. In 1936 the Spanish Civil War erupts. Malraux and Hemingway write about it, while Capa and Gerda Taro take photographs that raise public awareness worldwide. In April 1937, the bombing of Guernica inspires Picasso’s mural-sized Guernica, a symbol of Franco’s savage militarism and fascism in general. The Spanish Republic is lost, and Spanish Civil War ends with Franco’s victory.
