In the aftermath of the Commune, impressionist Renoir immortalized the vivid light of a Parisian people overcoming violence and misery through the joyful expression of their freedom.

At the age of 35, the painter shared with his friends in Montmartre the misery of exploited workers, penniless artists and denigrated prostitutes who gathered on Sundays at the Bal du Moulin de la Galette to forget their condition for the duration of a joyous dance. Renoir’s large-scale canvas depicts them in the service of a radiant, immortal conviviality.

From the heights of a city of light, soon to be the capital of the world, he affirms in the reflections of fabrics, the softness of smiles and the brilliance of a colorful afternoon the living strength of the invisible people, celebrating the joy of the forgotten as an expression of their eternal freedom.
