Misty — The Erroll Garner Story takes us into the life of Erroll Garner, one of jazz’s most iconic legends. He is the genius behind Misty, a popular melody that everyone has heard, but few know the story behind or the man who created it. A virtuoso pianist, Garner achieved immense public success, yet his private life, complex and tumultuous, remains largely unknown.
The film delves into his world, transporting us to post-war America, a time marked by a consumer boom and the Vietnam War. Through carefully selected dialogue, archives, and interviews, Misty reveals Erroll Garner’s personality with a narration carried by his music. Blending black-and-white and color sequences, this documentary offers an intimate and musical perspective on the life of an artist whose talent left an indelible mark on jazz history.
Director’s statement:
I started playing the piano when I was a child. Our father put me and my brother at the piano at a very early age, focusing on classical music, of course, as it should be in a “bourgeois” home. Later, in the seventies, we discovered jazz : Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Rhoda Scott, Dave Brubeck.… But at home we were only allowed to play Mozart or Bach. Jazz was only played in the hidden. One day our dad found the jazz records and broke them. Later, I discovered a pianist who became the greatest for me, whose elegant, flowing, natural and virtuosic playing, I still love and admire : Erroll Garner.
