La Main et l’Esprit

Thomas Johnson

France | 2007 | 46 min
The camera follows Henry Bauchau (19132012) as he creates the art edition of Pierre sans chagrin, his major poetic work. He reveals the structure and intricacies of the piece, taking us to the very heart of his language, which is illustrated by calligrapher Albert Palma. Their search for the right word and gesture reflect their desire to find an internal coherence, a breath and rhythm leading to the inexpressible. Through this meeting of artistic minds, held amidst the stones of the Cistercian Thoronet Abbey in southern France, the film reflects the influence of East and West on the notions of body and soul.
