In a world oversaturated with greenwashing, a filmmaker from the Amazon region picks up her camera to tell the rainforest’s true story. This manifesto-film dismantles colonial narratives that have shaped the Amazon as a land of abundance, exposing the violence and prejudice tied to its exploitation. From Munich to Belém, it delves into how the concept of a “demographic void” and the portrayal of a primitive territory have fueled racism and inequality.
Through this exploration, the film amplifies the voices of Amazonian peoples and interrogates pressing ecological challenges. With a bold narrative and striking cinematography, it stands as part of a new wave of postcolonial cinema — clear-eyed and essential.
Winner of the 2024 Environmental Film Festival (FICA) in Brazil for Best Feature Film and the 2024 Bali International Film Festival (Balinale) for Best Documentary Film.
Director’s notes :
The Amazon is more than a backdrop for environmental debates; it is a vibrant society, producing complex knowledge. This film is a manifesto that calls for new spaces, rooted in the explanation of what has happened to us over the past centuries. Its goal is to challenge the world to understand us as part of history — not just as part of natural history — and to rise up against the profound silencing we, urban and traditional Amazonian peoples, face. No More History Without Us is not just a documentary; it is a call to action to reopen all the paths that close when Amazonians attempt to think and speak for themselves.
