In 2023, Ukrainian composer Alla Zagaykevych created a new musical piece for the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) led by conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt. During her creative residency in Montreal, she was faced with a heartbreaking work context. On one side, the tranquility of the banks of the St. Lawrence River and, on the other, a memory tormented by the Russian bombings on Kyiv. Based on a text by Ukrainian poet Oleh Lysheha, this musical work of great intensity, yet punctuated with heavy silences, shows snowy landscapes close to those of a disquieted Ukraine.
