Starting September 27, immerse yourself in the captivating world of Kent Monkman as you admire the iconic and monumental works of this world-renowned Canadian artist, a member of the ocêkwi sîpiy (Fisher River Cree Nation). Through his subversive lens, he revisits history painting to deconstruct colonial narratives and offer a new perspective on our past and present.

These works address contemporary concerns such as the climate crisis and environmental protection, the consequences of government policies on First Nations, intergenerational trauma, and the affirmation of identity among two-spirit, queer, and trans Indigenous communities.

The exhibition includes loans from Canadian and American institutions, as well as a selection of works from the MMFA collection.

Salle Bourgie Kent Monkman2

Artist Kent Monkman will present a preview of excerpts from The Miss Chief Cycle, a lyrical creation composed of three scenes based on The Memoirs of Miss Chief Eagle Testickle by Kent Monkman and Gisèle Gordon. Performed by leading Canadian voices accompanied by musicians from the OSM, this unique work will bring Kent Monkman’s paintings to life on stage, highlighting the divide between the worldview of the Cree people and that of European colonialists. A fabulous show not to be missed, presented in its world premiere at Bourgie Hall!

A co-production of Studio Kent Monkman and Bourgie Hall, presented in collaboration with the MMFA and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
