What’s the USA? | New collection on ARTS.FILM
Image from the film Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President
With the American election in mind, this week we turn our attention to a neighbor that is sometimes fascinating, sometimes alarming. For this collection, we will be guided by a simple and singular question: what exactly are the USA?
Visionary painters (Hopper: An American Love Story or Georgia O’Keeffe: une artiste au Far West)? An urban culture that spreads across the globe (All the Streets are Silent: The Convergence of Hip Hop and Skateboarding)? Legendary actors (Jodie Foster — Hollywood dans la peau or Citizen Jane, l’Amérique selon Fonda)? A society haunted by the horrors of its past (Toni Morrison et les fantômes de l’Amérique)? A bit of all that. But it is also, as Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President recounts, a country where the 39th president was friends with Bob Dylan. And to think that the next one could be buddies with Elon Musk.
We say nothing, but we think otherwise.
