An autumn marked by six must-see events

A unique platform in North America with a catalog of over 700 films covering more than 20 artistic disciplines, ARTS.FILM will offer a brilliant program this fall! Music, dance, architecture, contemporary art and legendary figures — audiences across the country will have access to arts, cultures, and creations from here and abroad.

To kick off the fall season, ARTS.FILM is offering a free screening of the documentary BIG GIANT WAVEby the brilliant Marie-Julie Dallaire. This film, which has won over both audiences and critics alike, delves into the invisible yet universal power of music. BIG GIANT WAVE pays tribute to music, that abstract, immaterial, and invisible sequence of sounds that triggers the same reaction in the brain as chocolate, sex, or drugs.

Conceived as a cinematic wave, this documentary takes us from Montreal to Cremona via Sweden, Mexico, and the American West Coast to meet fascinating scientists and artists who, from their diverse backgrounds, illustrate the essential link between rhythm, music, our planet, the brain, everyday life, and our collective humanity.

Offering this film for free viewing reaffirms ARTS.FILMs commitment to sharing powerful and inspiring works from our region.

COLLECTION « The art of the selfie »

In October, ARTS.FILM offers a unique reflection on self-image and its variations through art and cinema. The collection The Art of the Selfie” questions our relationship with self-representation from yesterday to today, between narcissism, memory, and identity affirmation.

By bringing together works from both painting and cinema, this collection explores how the act of showing oneself becomes an artistic endeavor in itself.

Kubrick affiche

IN OCTOBER

KUBRICK BY KUBRICK by Gregory Monro

This documentary is the highlight of the new releases: it offers a rare and intimate portrait of Stanley Kubrick, based on previously unheard audio interviews. This film reveals a legendary filmmaker through his own voice and, by extension, questions the power of images on identity.

FOCUS Mexican cinemas, in partnership with CINEXMEDIA and Espacio México

Through a selection of feature films and short films, it highlights iconic figures of Mexican origin as well as more recent and daring voices that are renewing the artistic narratives of today’s Mexico. This panorama, which combines cinema, visual arts, music, and architecture, illustrates the plurality and vitality of Mexican culture and underscores ARTS.FILM mission: building bridges between traditions and the avant-garde, between territories and imaginations.

The CINEXMEDIA partnership studies the function and potential benefits of the cinematic experience among different population groups and in different contexts.

FOCUS MEXIQUE

IN NOVEMBER

COLLECTION « X‑raying loneliness »

In mid-November, ARTS.FILM invites viewers to discover a rare film: LINES, by Slovak director Barbora Sliepková, presented as part of this collection. This delicate work, at the crossroads of documentary and poetic essay, paints a sensitive portrait of a city and its inhabitants, captured in the melancholy of their daily lives.

Not widely distributed when it was released, this film deserves to be rediscovered: it accurately captures the fragile beauty of ordinary lives and questions how urban landscapes shape our loneliness.

COLLECTION « When contemporary art goes off the rails »

At the end of November, make way for a daring collection that highlights the areas of friction between artistic creation, excess, and provocation.

It makes us question the excesses of a milieu where the quest for recognition, ego, and market forces sometimes obscure the original meaning of creation. With humor, irony, and a touch of criticism, it invites viewers to reflect on the limits of art and what it reveals about our era.

COLLECTION « How to become a star? »

To close out the year, ARTS.FILM celebrates a legendary figure in contemporary art in December: Niki de Saint Phalle. The documentary Viva Niki – The Spirit of Niki de Saint Phalle, included in this collection, traces the flamboyant career of this extraordinary artist.

From her famous colorful Nanas” to her monumental projects such as the Tarot Garden, Niki de Saint Phalle constantly reinvented herself and left a lasting mark on the collective imagination. The film looks back on her boldness, her independence, and her ability to transform art into an act of freedom.

By presenting this inspiring portrait, ARTS.FILM honors a creator who continues to fascinate and resonate with new generations.

Art cinema and cinema about art is an opening. Art cinema and cinema about art cannot speak to just a few people. Art and art-about-art cinema never shines as brightly as when it enters the arena. It is based on these few truths that the fall program has been designed. Collections with a deceptively lighthearted tone, such as The Art of the Selfie,” How to Show Off at a Party,” and How to Become a Star,” point the way in this direction. Over the course of these few months, it will be possible to discover some real gems, including Barbora Sliepková’s film LINES, a funny, poetic documentary that offers an X‑ray view of our urban and contemporary solitudes. The works of several giants will also be revisited, from Niki de Saint Phalle to Stanley Kubrick, while films by artists such as Sisyphe (Victor Pilon, 2023) and Bab Sebta (Randa Maroufi, 2019) will be presented.

Finally, ARTS.FILM continues its commitment to making art accessible to all through a monthly program of free films. Starting in September, BIG GIANT WAVE by Marie-Julie Dallaire will be featured: a powerful tribute to music performed by Patrick Watson, this documentary will set the tone for our new season. — Paul Rothé, Director of Films on Art programming and ARTS.FILM Programmer.
