In March 1995, the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, carried out by members of the Aum sect, shocked Japan and the world. Dozens were killed, and thousands injured. This horrific event deeply impacted Japanese society and left a lasting mark on writer Haruki Murakami, who returned to his homeland after several years abroad, profoundly affected by the tragedy.
In Underground, Murakami investigates the reasons behind individuals joining the Aum sect, gathering testimonies from victims and former members. The documentary explores taboo aspects of Japanese society and marks a turning point in Murakami’s career. It inspired his major work 1Q84, where he delves into themes of cult influence and the search for truth, blending reality with fiction. Through its carefully crafted aesthetic, the film underscores his exploration of the social psyche, a theme that resonates throughout his writing.

Claire Laborey
Claire Laborey works between Paris and Berlin. Her studies in comparative literature and political science sketched the beginnings of a pendular life between these two cities. After training in documentary filmmaking in Quebec, and starting out at the France 2 newsroom in Berlin, she now works mainly for Arte. She has produced portraits of artists for the L’Art et la manière collection, as well as a number of documentaries.
