lessons on flight
Cecilia Araneda
Presented only in theatres.
This film is part of the FIFA Expérimental section program Toucher à distance.
Shot in black and white 16mm film, eco-processed with olives and hand-coloured on site in rural Chile at the site of her father’s childhood home, Cecilia Araneda’s lessons on flight examines the flight patterns of the green-backed firecrown hummingbird.
Araneda’s art practice is strongly rooted in the examination of private and public memory as it connects to identity. Known for her documentary essays on personal experiences, the filmmaker has also developed a singular approach to experimental filmmaking where the intimacy and fragility of an observation meets with carefully processed images and sounds.
In the presence of director Cecilia Araneda on March 15th in Montreal.

Cecilia Araneda
Chilean-Canadian filmmaker Cecilia Araneda’s works have screened at festivals and venues such as Visions du Reél, Rotterdam, Ann Arbor, Jihlava, Uppsala, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Images and TIFF Wavelengths. Aesthetically, Araneda’s art practice is strongly rooted in the examination of private and public memory as it connects to identity, consciously working against the idea of the fully controlled image. Her family’s experience fleeing Chile’s military dictatorship also plays a large role in her body of work. Most well-known for her work in analogue film, Araneda works in experimental, documentary and fiction forms.
