This film is part of the FIFA Expérimental section program Toucher à distance.
In her short film où la nuit tombe un bruit sourd, Sophie Watzlawick engages in a commented observation of various natural phenomena and other states of being. Shot in black and white, the film is accompanied by textual fragments both on screen and in voice-over that lead to a reflection on the instability and unpredictability of the world today. The visual material, which includes “shivering images” (as captioned on screen), is paralleled by an equally complex soundtrack — the result of an assemblage of works by sound artists Marcelo S. Busato, Asi Fröcker, Andrea Neumann and Anouschka Trocker, as well as by Watzlawick.

Sophie Watzlawick
Sophie Watzlawick is a Berlin-based film artist. Alongside her work as a filmmaker, she works artistically and technically on various projects in the fields of film, theater, performance and music. She is an active member and co-founder of the analog film collective LaborBerlin. Her film and sound work is based on sociopolitical issues viewed through the prism of philosophical and poetic concepts. The strong contrast between rigid social structures and the human dimension, also inseparable from life path, is of particular interest to her. She is interested in the hidden, in the signs that emerge in the dark, in those places whose ground is still unknown, and in seeing events that are commonly perceived as static in a new way. Her films are shown internationally at various festivals, museums and experimental music venues and distributed by Arsenal Verleih (Berlin) and Light Cone (Paris).
