Between Silence and Sin explores the life of Ana Blandiana, one of Europe’s most significant yet often overlooked poets, whose words became a symbol of resistance under one of the world’s most brutal dictatorships. In communist Romania, poetry represented the last fragments of freedom, and poets like Blandiana, who dared to challenge oppression, became icons of democracy while also being labeled enemies of the state.
Through a blend of archival footage, interviews, and readings of Ana’s poetry, this documentary examines the power of art in the face of tyranny. Against the backdrop of the fight for freedom, Between Silence and Sin captures Blandiana’s voice as a force of defiance against oppression.
Director’s statement:
I have long been captivated by the elegantly simple and evocative poems Blandiana creates, and by her tremendous sacrifices as an activist which are often overlooked. Having met her early in my career at the site of the memorial museum, I hope to raise awareness of not only her work but to the tremendous impact she has had on Romanian society.
In the making of this film, I found it impossible to disentangle her life and her writing from the eight decades of Romanian history she has influenced. My goal was to capture Ana Blandiana’s story over her eight decades of life thus far, and to showcase her poetry that is so intrinsically tied to the soul of a country in a way that is perhaps no longer possible for poetry to be.

Diana Nicolae is an accomplished documentary filmmaker with more than two decades of diverse media experience. A native Romanian, she began her career in media working as a TV news reporter in the post-Communist era, prior to working as a writer for BBC Radio on the first dramatic series inspired by the country in transition to democracy. She has produced and directed several documentary films about Romania, delving into topics as diverse as abuse in Communist-era prisons, intellectual migration from Eastern Europe, and a group of camera-shy nuns attempting to maintain traditions in a monastery that is one of Romania’s most visited tourist attractions. Her films have screened at film festivals worldwide, and been broadcast on public television in the United States.
