Klipperty Klöpp
Andrew Kötting
Presented only in theatres.
This film is part of the program Carte Blanche au Centre Pompidou.
In Klipperty Klöpp, Andrew Kötting stages himself in the middle of a field, running frenetically and repeatedly, like a carousel horse doomed to move in endless circles. The work has been described by the artist as: “Joseph Beuys meets Benny Hill in a post-punk spectacle: a pagan happening blending bestiality, sodomy, and boundless energy, combining frenetic performance with Beckettian ramblings from another world.” Filmed on Super 8 by Leila McMillan, his partner and collaborator, this debut film embodies a post-punk spirit characteristic of 1980s England, infused with a pagan sensibility. Drawing on the deep roots of popular experience and folkloric memory, this short film exists at the intersection of filmed performance and a gesture akin to Land Art. With Klipperty Klöpp, Kötting turns the motif of the endless loop into a metaphor for the film itself — an enduring space where traces of archaic times remain imprinted.

Andrew Kötting
Andrew Kötting (1959) discovered Super 8 film as a student at Ravensbourne College of Art in the 1980s. At that time, his artistic practice focused mainly on performance art. He subsequently worked as a decorative painter and scrap metal dealer. In 1982, he made his film Klipperty Kloop with the support of the London Film-Makers’ Co-op. Uninterested in linear narrative, he developed a highly personal style based largely on sound manipulation. Winning the Arts Council/Channel Four Experimental award marked a turning point in his career, prompting him to embark on feature-length films in which he combines a documentary approach with visual experimentation. He is currently Professor of Time Based Media at Canterbury University of the Creative Arts.
