Rodakis is a short experimental documentary by Olaf Nicolai that delves into the architectural and cultural significance of a house built on the Greek island of Aegina in the late 19th century by the mysterious figure Alekos Rodakis. The film explores the house’s influence on Greek modernism and its connection to the popular traditions of the time. Through a minimalist narrative and an intricate visual style, Nicolai invites the audience to reflect on the intersection of architecture, history, and individual identity. The absence of dialogue enhances the emotional and intellectual impact, focusing on the immersive experience of space and memory.

Olaf Nicolai

Over the past twenty years, Olaf Nicolai (born 1962 in Halle, East Germany, lives and works in Berlin) has been developing conceptual art influenced by the philosophical heritage that nourished his formative years in East Germany. His work questions the aporias of Romantic aesthetics as much as those of Marxism. Whatever the form or medium freely adopted — photography, sculpture, publishing, design, installation or performance — the artist’s aim is to activate situations that engage in a critical dialogue with the context in which they take place. Right down to his material processes, his work hijacks the modes of production and the cultural, economic and social references of the industrialized world.
