Mode vs. Folklore, entre traditions et transgressions : Carte blanche à Andreina Aveledo
This screening will be followed by a discussion moderated by journalist and fashion columnist Lolitta Dandoy with Andreina Aveledo (Le FIFA programmer), Chantal Durivage (VPE Développement Créatif, M.A.D Collectif), Sara Jade Allard-Théberge (communications and marketing consultant, mmode), Julien Silvestre (director general, Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec).
Behind the word fashion hides a spectrum of contrasting phenomena, ranging from the extravagance of ultra-luxury to the absurdity of fast fashion’s prêt-à-jeter. But we often forget that what we call fashion, perceived as ephemeral, actually embodies centuries of techniques, traditions, craftsmanship, hands at work, beliefs, and folklore. With this carte blanche, I wanted to shed light on this fashion emerging from peripheral streets, replicating itself on the catwalks of haute couture in Paris or New York, infused with a good dose of imagination, and perhaps even appropriation.
It Is Not Spring, Until All Flowers Blossom by Curry Sicong Tian is inspired by the garment workers’ strike in New York in 1982. Another Feather In Her Bonnet by Aki Pagratis and Ancestral Threads by Sean Stiller question our appreciation of the ancestral beauty of First Nations. Fashion vs. Words by Claudia Mallart remind us that rooted fashion is possible. We, Mexicans by Marcos Castro and MUXES by Iván Olita redefine beauty and gender stereotypes in Mexico, showing us how fashion can be a powerful means of expression, resistance, and challenging established norms. Dior Metamorphosis, Concealing and Revealing reflects the intention to preserve ancestral techniques and safeguard cultural practices embodied by fabrics in Mexico in the Dior Cruise 2024 collection. These films are the proof that we might need to find another word to define this ‘fashion’ that endures, transcends trends, and strengthens a sense of community belonging.
