Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, The Square is a fierce satire of the contemporary art world, and the fourth feature by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund. The documentary highlights the creative process of a director passionate about sociology, as well as The Square’s role as a critique of Swedish society: with a growing number of people begging on the street, this cradle of Scandinavian social democracy is seeing a rise of individualism and inequality.

As a documentary filmmaker, Manuelle Blanc makes cultural films that show a desire to film creation in all its diversity: the process of creating a play (Krzysztof Warlikowski — Olivier Cadiot — Handspring Puppet Co.), highlighting the work of choreographers (Michel Schweizer — Julie Dossavi), or questioning the place of women in art history (A la force du pinceau — Objectif femmes). In 2017, she portrayed the filmmaker Ingmar Bergman through her iconic film Persona. In 2019, she also directed 36 000 ans d’art moderne, a film that looks at the fascination of modern and contemporary art artists with prehistoric art.
