This video is presented as part of the free Pop-up programming from March 16 to 26, 2022 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm in the Tudor Hall at Holt Renfrew Ogilvy.

Ouri performs her song Grip, playing bass simultaneously while two surgeons remove parts of her brain. This exceptional surgical practice has been performed on musician Dagmar Turner to remove a brain tumour while she played her violin, preventing a loss of her musical and motor abilities. Here, it takes an emotional turn as this feels like Ouri chose to remove parts of her memory. As musicians have been struggling with mental health forever, this fictional practice becomes an invasive and sophisticated form of self-medication.

Derek Branscombe

Derek is a Montreal-based director focusing on crafting highly finessed film and video works. After spending the first years of his career establishing himself as a cinematographer and working with some of Quebec’s top directors and artists, he shifted focus to directing creative and commercial projects. He has shaped an evocative and deeply sensitive touch, though still clearly informed by his highly technical skills. Refined lighting and precise camera movements work their way with ease through each of his projects, resulting in surprising and engaging works.
