In the wake of the much-awarded Moriyama San, Tokyo Ride is a new chapter in the immersion of Bêka & Lemoine in the hectic daily life of Tokyo. Revisiting the road movie genre in the form of an aesthetic and personal diary, the black-and-white film takes us on board Ryue Nishizawa’s vintage Alfa Romeo for a wild tour of Tokyo streets. More than a classic portrait of one of today’s most talented and celebrated Japanese architects, the film portrays the pure spontaneity of this urban jaunt among friends. As they go, Nishizawa talks about his close relationship with his home city through the sites that are his personal favourites – buildings that influenced him and some of his own architecture projects. The film explores the roots of architectural practice and how the built and cultural environment feeds and shapes our imagination.
