WATER 2
This film will be presented during the event La Nuit du court on March 16, 2024 at Concordia University.

In his film WATER 2, Marc Kandalaft processes his experiences of armed conflicts from the Lebanese Civil War to the 1991 Gulf War in a dense visual narrative. With a subtle blend of neo-pictorialism and surrealism, this film employs a rich palette of visual and auditory sensations, in which water, a key element in Kandalaft’s work, serves as a common thread. Natural elements are used to reflect the ambivalence of the states of existence. Sound composition with echoes of musique concrète and variations in framing and rhythm result in a short film that is both formally and acoustically vivid, hypnotic, and immersive.

Marc Kandalaft

Photography, film, and sound design are the elements which Marc molds and shapes into bold statements chronicling the impact of humanity on nature and on itself.

Marc was born in war-torn Lebanon then exiled to Saudi Arabia. He shares an ancestry that is equal parts Lebanese, French, and Armenian. He has seen the world in ways few others have.

Educated at Paris’ Penninghen School of Art Direction and Interior Architecture, he went on to found his first design studio there, Marc Kandalaft Design, in 2000, later working from both sides of the Atlantic as he transitioned and transformed over 14 years from a small studio to one encompassing a much wider scope; RAP Rethink. Act. Provoke.

That journey also saw him devote much time and consideration to design education with Inspire-Play-Innovate, a workshop program held internationally in collaboration with Ico‑D, including the Triennale di Milano, the Seoul Design Centre, and Casa Wabi in Mexico.

His vision comes full circle in May, 2023, with KANDALAFT, a hybrid of solo and collaborative ventures where visual art, design, branding, film, sound, and AI research come together in an engaging, multi-sensory experience.

Marc operates from his studios in Old Montreal, moving between North America, Europe, and the Middle East where he is called upon to consult top-tier corporations and teach at institutions of higher learning.
