A pivotal figure between two worlds — tradition and modernity, figurative and abstract art — this film, set between 1910 and 1925, takes us to Paris and to Vitebsk, a Belorussian town situated 500 kilometres from Moscow. In Paris, Chagall immerses himself in avant-garde currents — cubism, fauvism, and surrealism — while integrating the Russian and Yiddish worlds into the theatrical space of his paintings. Returning to his hometown, he weaves new ties with his cultural and artistic roots and finds his own pictorial language, fed by love, human suffering in wartime, the hope raised by the October Revolution, and frictions with Kazimir Malevich and the Russian avant-garde. Through Chagall’s personal and artistic career, this documentary also opens the door to the history of Jewish artists of the Russian Empire. A tour de force that sheds light on a less-well-known period of one of the great masters of figurative modern art.
