Iwona Pasinska’s short film uses theatrical elements to reflect the ornamental motifs in the work of Polish painter Zofia Stryjenska. The parade of characters on screen represents the different aspects of the painter’s own character; they perform the dances depicted in her paintings; we even have a glimpse of Stryjenska’s colour palette. Their music and words evoke the traditional music that, perhaps, the artist’s subjects danced to. Bória sheds light on the twin worlds of the individual and the community: both governed by the rhythm of nature, by moments of joy and pain, and by bounty and desolation. Pasinska’s expressive choreography combines elements of the traditional Hutsul and Polish cultures and reframes them in contemporary dance. Magnified by still shots, this is a vision of two distinct arts with more in common than we might think.
