Why do we see certain colours even when they are not there? By meticulously analyzing the 100 yuan note with Mao Zedong’s portrait, the Chinese director Tang Han notes that (despite the official representations and the general perception), the note is pink rather than red. Reflecting on the history and future of Chinese society, Pink Mao also debunks some preconceived ideas about digitization, globalization, capitalism and gender.
